Offline and notifications
What works without a connection, how the app keeps itself fresh, and which reminders it can send you.
Install it
Exp Planner can live on your home screen like any other app, with no store needed:
- Android: testers get the Android app (see Android). In Chrome you can also use Install app from the menu.
- iPhone: in Safari, Share → Add to Home Screen.
- Computer: in Chrome or Edge, the Install icon in the address bar.
Long-press the installed app’s icon for New expense, New income and Import a statement.
Without a connection
Reading. Every screen you’ve opened in the last two weeks opens without a connection, even after restarting the app, and shows “You’re offline. Showing data from 10:42” at the top. This copy is kept on the device for your account only and is cleared when you sign out.
Doing. These work offline and wait on your device until the connection is back:
- adding a purchase or income with Quick add;
- Mark paid / received and Skip this month;
- changing a transaction’s category, note or tags, marking it reviewed, deleting it.
The screen changes straight away. When the connection returns, the actions are sent in order; a yellow bar says “Syncing…”. If one is refused (say, the transaction was deleted on another device), you can Retry or Discard it. Signing out with unsent changes asks first.
Things that need a connection: changing amounts and dates, transfers, splits, imports and restoring a backup.
Fresh numbers
An installed app has no reload button, so it refreshes on its own: after a minute away, the screen you come back to updates and shows “Updated” for a moment. On a phone you can also pull down, or use Refresh in the menu.
Notifications
Turn them on per device in Settings → Notifications, then pick what you’d like to hear about:
- Bills: a reminder N days before a bill is due, and on the day.
- Time to import a statement: an account on budget has had nothing new for a week.
- Transactions waiting for a category for two days or more.
- A category over plan, once a month per category.
- The month is over: in the first days of a new month, until you close the last one.
- Your week: on Mondays, last week’s spending and this week’s bills (off unless you turn it on).
- Credit cards: a payment coming up, the minimum due tomorrow, the payment due today (with bill reminders on).
They arrive between 9:00 and 21:00 your time, each one once. Amounts appear in the text only if you allow it. Send a test checks that everything works.
On an iPhone, notifications work only from the app added to the Home Screen.
