Budget
Plan each category for the month, see spending against it as you go, roll leftovers over, and close the month with a short review.
Budget is your month’s plan, category by category, next to what’s actually been spent. Pick the month at the top: you can plan up to a year ahead.
The table
Categories sit in groups, income and spending apart. For each one you see:
- Planned: tap the amount to change it.
- Spent (or received) so far.
- Left, with a bar that fills as you spend.
- A pace mark: are you spending faster than the month is going? Halfway through the month with 80% of the plan gone, you’ll see it.
Bills and fund contributions show as their own lines inside their categories, so you can tell fixed costs from everyday ones. Taxes due that month are added to their category’s plan, marked “from taxes” (see Taxes).
Spending without a category has its own row, so the totals always match what really left your accounts.
The summary at the top
Income planned − Spending & funds = Not planned yet. That’s income you haven’t given a plan yet. Plan it, or leave it and it stays saved. If the plan is bigger than your income, you’ll see “Planned over income”.
Leftovers: rollover
Each category can treat its leftover in one of three ways:
- don’t carry anything over;
- carry the leftover to next month;
- carry both the leftover and any overspending.
The chip on the category shows which one it uses. The default for new categories is in Settings → Budget defaults.
A new month
When a month starts without a plan, the app offers to copy last month’s or use the average of recent months. You can also let it do that by itself: Settings → Budget defaults → New month.
Close the month
When a month is over, Review shows how it went:
- what you kept, and what share of your income that is;
- where the income went: fixed costs, planned and unplanned spending, funds, what’s left;
- each category against its plan, and spending that had no plan at all;
- anything unusual compared with your last three months.
Loose ends are listed too: transactions without a category, bills not marked. Then carry leftovers over, put the rest into a fund if you like, and choose Close the month. The Overview offers the review all of the next month, and past months in Budget have a “Review …” link.
