Safe to spend
Safe to spend: how much can you spend per day?
Your bank balance says how much money is on the card. It doesn’t say how much of it is already promised: the rent next week, a tax in ten days, the money you meant to put aside. Safe to spend is what’s left once those are taken off, and split across the days left, it tells you what you can spend today.

How it’s counted
Start with your own money: what’s on the accounts you spend from, cards and cash. Savings you don’t touch stay out, and so does a credit card’s limit: that money isn’t yours.
Take away what this month already has a claim on: bills that haven’t gone out yet, taxes due, and what you set aside for funds (bigger costs you’re saving up for). Then a small safety buffer. What’s left is safe to spend.
Your everyday budgets (groceries, eating out) aren’t taken off. They’re spent out of Safe to spend, so nothing counts twice.
Safe to spend vs your bank balance
The bank balance is a fact about today. Safe to spend is about the whole month: a bill due on the 28th lowers it already on the 3rd, so the money isn’t spent twice. That’s why it’s usually lower than the balance, and why it doesn’t jump when your salary arrives: the bills that salary pays are counted too.
Why a figure per day
A monthly amount is hard to feel in the middle of a week. Divided by the days left, it becomes something to check at the till: under it, and the month works out; over it today, and tomorrow’s is a little lower. As the month goes on, the figure follows what you actually spent.
If you owe on a credit card
Spending on a credit card doesn’t leave your account until the statement is paid. So there’s a second figure: Safe to spend minus what you owe on the cards. The first says what you can spend today; the second, what’s really left once the cards are paid.
Questions
What does “safe to spend” mean?
The money on your everyday accounts that isn’t needed yet for this month’s bills, taxes, savings and a small buffer. You can spend it without falling short later in the month.
How much can I spend per day?
Divide Safe to spend by the days left in the month, today included. With €716 safe to spend and 21 days left, that’s about €34 a day.
Is it the same as my bank balance?
No. Your balance includes money that’s already promised: next week’s rent, a tax payment, what you meant to save. Safe to spend takes those off first.
What should the safety buffer be?
Enough for a small surprise: a taxi, a pharmacy, a forgotten subscription. Many people start with €100–€200 and adjust it after a month or two.
Do I need to connect my bank?
No. The calculator on this page needs only a few numbers, and Exp Planner works from statements you import, with no bank login.
